Official Opening of the New School Library
Wallington High School for Girls was delighted to celebrate the official opening of its new school library last term, with a special event attended by students, staff, Trustees, governors and invited guests. The occasion marked not only the unveiling of a new physical space, but the celebration of a shared commitment to learning, curiosity and community.
Opening the event, the Headteacher described the library as “the beating heart of learning at Wallington High School for Girls,” emphasising that a school library is “far more than a room filled with books.” She spoke about the library as a place where ideas begin, imaginations grow, and students encounter perspectives beyond their own. Reflecting the school’s values, she highlighted the importance of courage in tackling challenging texts, compassion in understanding others through reading, and curiosity as the driving force behind lifelong learning.
A student speaker movingly captured what the library means to students themselves. She described it as “a central point for community and learning”. She spoke of discovering new interests, finding comfort in reading, and watching friendships and ideas grow between the shelves.
The student also celebrated the vibrancy of the space, noting that “there’s always something happening,” from displays and recommendations to events and new book arrivals. She praised the inclusive nature of the library, describing it as “one of the few places in the school where year groups can really mix naturally,” and thanked the student librarians and Mrs Reilly, whose work keeps “the heart and spirit of the library beating and alive.”
The Headteacher went on to thank all those who helped bring the library to life, including staff, students, Trustees, governors and the wider school community. She reminded students that “this library belongs to you” and encouraged them to use it to read widely, think deeply and explore new ideas.
The new library now stands as a powerful symbol of the school’s mission: to nurture confident, thoughtful and independent learners, and to inspire a lifelong love of learning for generations to come.
